Pre-workout is generally safe for breastfeeding. But. Like most things, the devil is in the detail. If you’re a new (or expectant) mom, this article will help you figure out if pre-workout is okay for you and share our thoughts on some brands we like.

The first thing to know is that pre-workout, like dietary supplements in general, are not regulated by the FDA. You have to do more research to understand the ingredients, and choose a reputable brand.

Also good to remember that as a rule, it’s always a good idea to consult with your doctor or a lactation consultant before using any(!) supplements.

What is Pre-Workout?

As the name suggests, pre-workout is taken before exercise to enhance performance, increase energy, improve muscle recovery and improve focus. It typically comes in powder form and is mixed with water or another drink.

It is used widely by athletes, bodybuilders, and regular fitness enthusiasts to help them push through workouts and achieve fitness goals. So if you are considering using pre-workout, you’re in good company.

Not all supplements are created equal though.

Many pre-workout supplements will contain a combination of ingredients. Caffeine, amino acids, creatine, and beta-alanine are common.

However anything with high levels of stimulants, will generally not be ideal for breastfeeding moms and pregnant women.

Isn’t caffeine safe?

We already know that caffeine can lead to irritability, poor sleep, and decreased milk supply. So, moderation is key.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that breastfeeding mothers limit caffeine intake to no more than 300 milligrams per day.

What this means is that it is a good idea to choose a pre-workout supplement that contains no more than 200 milligrams of caffeine per serving. Ideally, we would suggest choosing a stimulant-free brand.

Just as your morning cup of coffee can sometimes leave you feeling jittery, you need to be sure that this is not passing to your baby.

You want to watch baby very closely to see if and how she is reacting to your pre-workout.

How long after drinking pre-workout can I breastfeed?

Pre-workout stimulants will generally pass through your body in an hour or two.

If you notice that your pre-work is affecting your baby, you can try a few things to minimise the effect

  • Pump into a bottle right before you nurse – this could help clear some of the caffeine from your body before baby gets her turn.
  • You could also nurse or pump before taking the pre-workout. This allows your body a little bit more time to process the caffeine and clear some of it from your system before baby’s next feeding.
  • Cut back on caffeine intake elsewhere. Skip some coffee (or other caffeinated drinks and snacks) during the rest of the day.
  • If all else fails choose a stimulant free pre-workout brand.

Ingredients to definitely avoid

Some supplements will use “proprietary blends”. Avoid these. It just means you can’t be sure what’s really in there. Better safe than sorry.

It is best to avoid any supplements that contain:

  • Ephedra
  • Yohimbe
  • Dimethylamylamine (DMAA)
  • Phenylalanine
  • Glucuronolactone

These ingredients have been linked to conditions like high blood pressure, seizures, and heart problems.

Phenylalanine and glucuronolactone may also decrease milk supply.

Alternatives to Pre-Workout

There are several options for getting a more natural energy boost without the downsides of pre-workout.

Natural Energy Boosters

Eating a balanced meal or snack that includes complex carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats can provide sustained energy throughout your workout. Some great options include:

  • Whole grain toast with almond butter and banana slices
  • Greek yogurt with berries and granola
  • Oatmeal with nuts and dried fruit

In addition to food, there are several natural supplements that can provide an energy boost without the use of stimulants. These include:

  • Green tea: contains some caffeine and antioxidants that can improve focus and energy
  • B vitamins: important for energy metabolism and can help reduce fatigue
  • Iron: essential for oxygen transport in the body and can help prevent fatigue

Healthy nutrition and constant hydration

A healthy and balanced diet will help ensure that both you and your baby are receiving the proper nutrients. According to the Mayo Clinic, breastfeeding mothers should consume an additional 450 to 500 calories per day to support milk production.

Stay hydrated while breastfeeding and exercising. Drink plenty of water – it will not only prevent dehydration, it will also help support milk production.

Listen to your body. If you experience any adverse effects after using pre-workout, stop using it and consult your healthcare provider.

While pre-workout supplements may be safe to consume in moderation, it’s important to consult with your doctor and read labels carefully to ensure that you and your baby are receiving the proper nutrition and avoiding any potential risks.

Let’s be clear, there is no serious scientific evidence suggesting that Blue Gatorade can help increase milk supply. None. Does this mean you should not drink Blue Gatorade or that drinking it will certainly have no impact for you? Also No.

I like to say in this my small corner of the internet, that it is important to keep the goal in mind. Ensuring you and baby are safe. Making sure you have the supply you need so that baby is hitting her growth milestones. These are vitally important.

Should we follow all the tips we get from our various communities, probably not. But we can study them, do our own research, and consult with professionals to be sure we are making the right decisions for US.

The goal of this post is to think aloud.

If I needed to increase my milk supply and someone suggested Blue Gatorade, or BodyArmor, or some other hack. How would I go about choosing if I should follow the advice or not?

Making that choice requires answering a few important questions.

Can Blue Gatorade Help Increase Breast Milk Supply?

There is an endless supply of blogs, online comments, forums, and mama groups who swear by this drink. So many moms have attested to drinking Gatorade to increase their supply, and seeing results within a short period of time.

Based on this alone, the answer to our first question would be a clear yes. Blue Gatorade CAN help increase milk supply.

How does it work?

Now, I have spent time with a lactation consultant either on a course or on a one-on one session. I know the ‘pillars of lactation’:

  • Frequent compression/stimulation and draining the breast
  • Lots of hydration and the right nutrition
  • Enough glandular tissue
  • Active hormones and hormonal receptors
  • Clear milk ducts and nerve pathways

So, how this particular hack fit into the pillars? Is it the hydration? If so, should I just drink water? Are there nutrients that have hormonal impact?

These are the questions to think about.

Do the ingredients in Blue Gatorade boost lactation?

Gatorade contains electrolytes (potassium and sodium), sugar and water. That’s pretty much it. Could these ingredients help a mom produce more milk?

Water

Well duh!

Breastmilk itself is 75% – 85% water. While being dehydrated does not reduce production of breastmilk, it may lead to less frequent feedings. Which lead to less frequent stimulation and draining of the milk ducts and causes lower milk production.

Every medical professional will also tell you the importance of staying hydrated and maintaining a healthy diet.

I have heard of some moms who do not like to drink water. In this case, I can imagine getting your hydration from Gatorade or any other acceptable drinks.

Eat well. Drink water. Got it. Nothing to do (specifically) with Gatorade yet.

Potassium and Sodium

The Potassium content could have some impact? I guess? Maybe for moms with a potassium deficiency?

Electrolytes like potassium and sodium are important for nutrition.

The great thing is that the body has a fantastic ability to adapt to varying amounts of electrolyte intake. The body’s electrolyte requirement is also affected by your body temperature and activity level.

What this boils down to is that the scientific evidence suggests that unless there is a severe potassium deficiency, you are unlikely to get increased milk production from drinking Gatorade (Source).

Again, this is not to say you shouldn’t drink it. Its just not contributing much to your body.

Boosting Calories

Whenever you nurse your baby as a breastfeeding mother, your body uses up energy and burns more calories than it usually does. Replacing those calories is important to maintaining your own health and keeping your milk production at acceptable levels.

Does this translate into drinking 1–2 bottles of Blue Gatorade?

The way I would think about this point is based on the NIH Guidance

  • On average, moderately active women need 2,000 to 2,200 calories a day
  • In addition to the above, breastfeeding moms need an extra 450 – 500 calories a day

Again, calories are not the goal. Proper nutrition is.

What happens if you don’t get enough calories, you are likely to lose weight. It becomes more of a concern if the caloric deficit is combined with poor nourishment. For example certain diets may require taking vitamin supplements.

Blue Gatorade ingredients do not help milk supply

To summarise, the ingredients in Blue Gatorade don’t appear to play a big role in lactation. This means that the ingredients alone likely do not explain why breastfeeding moms everywhere love this hack.

So why are moms relying on this drink to increase milk supply?

The Placebo Effect

The placebo effect refers to the phenomenon where, if you believe a substance will cause an effect, it can!

This is a real thing! It has been well researched and is recognized by the medical and scientific communities. Placebos work. Could this be the secret to the effectiveness of Blue Gatorade in improving milk supply?

Probably.

In simple terms, the most likely explanation for why women around the world see an increase in their milk supply after drinking Blue Gatorade is not because it contains electrolytes or some other ingredient. It is because they truly believe it will increase their milk supply!

Are the Gatorade Sports Drinks safe?

While it is always important to discuss with your lactation consultant before making any changes to your diet or food, blue Gatorade can be considered safe when consumed moderately by breastfeeding moms.

I do not have any major concerns here. Gatorade has been on the market for decades and is a massive brand. The quality of production is likely very high, and consistent.

We have also seen that the ingredients are very basic, so not a lot to worry about in terms of safety.

What this means is that if you choose to include Gatorade into your diet (in moderation), it is not likely to do any harm.

In fact, I’ve seen some claim that Gatorade can help reduce engorgement by serving as a compress for sore nipples. This is not something I have given much thought or seen anyone try, but the point is that the drinks are safe… apparently for a variety of uses.

When should mama (pumping or nursing) avoid using the Blue Gatorade Drinks?

As we have seen, the Placebo Effect can be effective. And some may choose to use Gatorade as their preferred source of hydration if they dont like to drink water.

But, are there instances where the risks of using these drinks may outweigh the potential reward of an increase your milk supply?

If you have any concerns about your health or the health of your baby as regards the artificial coloring in the drinks, feel free to address these concerns with a medical professional before consuming this or any other food or drinks.

Additionally, if you have an allergic reaction to corn, soy, or wheat, then you should avoid Gatorade drinks as it contains these ingredients.

Does the ‘blue’ color of the Gatorade Drinks matter?

This is an odd one. I have not seen any research discussing the blue coloring as a factor in milk supply. in any way whatsoever because there is nothing special about the ‘blue’ in the blue Gatorade drink.

Conclusion

There are many reasons why mamas may feel they are not getting breast milk supply they need. It can be frustrating. And I understand why we all want to get tips about what works from others in our shoes or who have gone through what we are going through.

Although Blue Gatorade is recommend a lot as a way to boost milk supply, there is just no real basis for these drinks to help improve milk production.

The main ways that Blue Gatorade likely helps is by keeping you hydrated, and through the Placebo effect.

]]>
High lipase breast milk is one of pumping moms’ most common problems. It is a condition that makes your breast milk smell or taste soapy after being stored for some time. This happens even if the milk has been properly stored in a fridge or freezer.

Kid

As a breastfeeding mom, there is nothing you can do to reduce or prevent the existence of lipase in your breast milk. This is because lipase is an enzyme that is naturally produced in breast milk of every woman. It helps break down the fats in your breast milk, making nutrients & fatty acids easily available to your baby.

The fat content in high lipase milk will break down more quickly, causing the milk to change in taste and smell during storage.

High lipase is not an issue while nursing or feeding fresh breast milk. It only affects milk that is not fed immediately. This is because lipase acts over time. The newer the milk, the less likely it is that excess lipase will be an issue.

How to scald breast milk

Breast milk with excess lipase is natural, and safe to consume, so if your baby doesn’t refuse it, you have nothing to worry about. However, some babies may not like to take such milk due to its smell and taste.

Luckily, there is a simple solution – it is called scalding.

Scalding involves heating up breastmilk, and then quickly cooling it again. Heating the milk slows down the lipase activity. Cooling it quickly makes sure the milk does not lose a lot of nutritional value.

So, Scalding is the best solution for dealing with excess lipase. It slows keeps your milk tasting fresh for longer, and keeps makes sure baby stays nourished.

Steps for Scalding Breast milk

Baby

Remember the key for scalding breastmilk: You want to heat up the milk then quickly cool it again. Keep reading for a step-by-step process is below

Scalding over a Stove

What You Need to Scald Breast milk over a stove

  • A stove
  • A clean pot or pan
  • A storage container (bottles, freezer bags, etc.)
  • Ice bath
  • An instant-read or digital thermometer

Heating a saucepan over a stove

Procedure OF scalding over a stove

Prepare an ice bath for the milk by filling a mixing bowl about halfway with ice cubes and a little cold water.

Transfer your milk into the clean pot or saucepan

Place pot on the stove

Stir it to ensure even heating

Heat the milk until you see bubbles around the edges (DO NOT boil). If you have a thermometer keep it in the milk until it reaches 180 degrees Fahrenheit (82 degrees Celsius).

Once you see bubbles or the milk reaches the desired temperature, remove it from the heat immediately.

Pour the heated milk into a bottle and put the bottle in the prepared ice bath to cool it quickly. To prevent spills, consider using a funnel or one of your flanges.

If you do not need to use it, best bet is to immediately store it in the refrigerator or freezer.

Using a Bottle Warmer to Scald

A bottle warmer can work just as well if you do not have access to a stove.

What You Need to Scald Breast milk in a Bottle Warmer:

Steps to Scalding Breast milk in a Bottle Warmer:

Prepare an ice bath for the milk by filling a mixing bowl about halfway with ice cubes and a little cold water.

Pour your milk into the stainless steel bottle. Stainless steel is ideal for this because there are risks involved in heating plastic, and glass can crack if it is cooled quickly after it is heated

Place the bottle in the warmer. Warmers with a safety shut-off feature will not get warm enough to scald since the needed temperature for scalding is a lot hotter than baby would drink.

Put the sterilized thermometer directly into the milk.

Switch on the warmer and keep watch over thermometer.

Once the milk temperature hits 180 F/82C, quickly remove the bottle and immediately place it in the ice bath to cool (be careful not to get ice water in the milk bottle).

As soon as the milk is cool, pour it into a storage container or bag

Mom with Baby

How soon should you scald breast milk after expressing?

Remember that you only need to consider scalding if you will be storing the milk. Also, scalding can only be done when the milk is still freshly pumped.

Knowing how soon to start the scalding process depends on the lipase level in your milk. Some moms can get away with scalding breast milk after waiting for a couple of hours since their milk doesn’t turn quickly, while others need to scald their milk immediately. To test what works best for you:

  • Express a couple of ounces of milk
  • Leave it at room temperature.
  • Taste it every hour and note when it starts to taste bad.

Once your milk has developed this odor or taste, there is no way to salvage it. If you’re just discovering this solution after storing up a large freezer stash, there are other options that you can use to save your milk. They include:

  1. Mix it into other foods:

– You can mix the “lipase milk” with fresh or scalded milk to help your baby take it. However, this is risky as you might have to throw out the fresh milk you use to experiment with this, if your baby doesn’t take the mixture.

– Or you mix it into homemade mashes, cereals, or oatmeal for her to eat. A drop of vanilla extract or chocolate syrup can improve the flavor. Do consult your health care provider first

  1. Try another time

You can also suspend feeding your baby with the milk later. This is because your baby might not be too keen on the taste now but might not mind it if given another time.

  1. Take to Milk Bank

If mixing doesn’t work, consider donating it to a milk bank. High lipase milk is not typically an issue for milk banks due to the process they use to mix, pasteurize & store it.

Besides, not all babies mind the taste of breast milk with high lipase; many of the babies receiving it are fed through a tube and wouldn’t know how it tastes. So instead of trashing a lipase milk, you can change a little baby’s life by donating it.

Mom with Baby

Conclusion

Scalding your breast milk does not remove or change the milk’s nutritional value. It does break down the excess lipase, so your baby won’t receive the same antibodies as he would from freshly expressed milk or direct latch feeding.

This isn’t a huge issue unless all you ever feed your baby is scalded milk.

So do ensure they are either breastfeeding or getting freshly pumped milk as well.

The post Breastfeeding Hacks: Does Body Armor increase milk supply? appeared first on Breastfeeding Confidential.

]]>
TLDR:

Body armor has not been scientifically proven to increase milk supply or lactation strength. However, many of the ingredients as well as the high calorie count might support lactation. There are also many verified testimonials and support posts from breastfeeding moms who claim this sports drink has helped their milk supply.

We often say here that the breastfeeding experience will vary from mom to mom. We also say frequently that when thinking about milk supply, the number one metric to consider is whether or not baby is gaining weight as she should. If baby is gaining weight, then she is getting all the milk she needs and you should not be too bothered about your milk supply.

But as we all know there are exceptions.

For years, healthcare providers have hammered on the importance of food and diet choices, and hydration to lactation success. These days, I would guess that most moms are doing their best to eat right and stay hydrated. But what is a mom to do when you just need a little boost? Maybe you need a short term boost to increase your frozen milk stash ahead of a trip or maybe baby’s appetite is increasing and you need some help to keep up.

Whatever the reason, we have all heard some of the claims out there about the experiences of different moms who swear by one drink or the other. Oatmeal, certain brands of coconut water, and many others are said to help improve milk supply. One of the more controversial myths or claims among breastfeeding mothers in terms of “drinking” is whether or not the body armor drink increases breast milk supply.

And in this article, we will be looking critically into it.

Does Body Armor Drink Increase Milk Supply?

To answer, I would say a tentative Yes. The body armor drink MAY increase milk supply.

Image showing the BodyArmor Drink and a bottled breast milk

To be clear, Body Armor has not been scientifically proven to increase milk supply or lactation strength, but my personal experience and a couple of verified testimonials and support posts from other breastfeeding moms have been able to affirm the wonder-working prowess of this milk-reviving sports drink.

However, it is important to note that experiences will vary. How Body Armor works for each person will depend on their own body, how much they consume, and how it is combined with other techniques such as block feeding or power pumping.

How many bottles should a breastfeeding mother consume daily?

I personally drank maybe a bottle of the Orange Mango every day, but I never really felt under pressure as far as milk supply. I can imagine that others may drink it more or less frequently and each person will need to make the right decision for themselves in conjunction with their healthcare professional.

I have read some posts where moms have consumed as many as 2-5 bottles per day. My impression is that this may be a lot. The drink contains quite a lot of sugar in addition to vitamins and electrolytes. Do think about if that level of sugar intake is right for you.

If you are considering relying primarily on this hack to boost supply, then it is important to talk to a professional about what other things you need to consider and also what other options are available.

How long does it take for Body Armor Drink to work?

For me, I would take the Body Armor drink for breastfeeding about 4 hours before a pumping session to increase milk supply. But on a general note, the Armor Drink could take between 2 to 6 hours before an increase in milk supply is noticed. Bottom line, your body needs certain nutrition and so long as it gets the nutrients, it will produce milk.

But let us also ponder the source of this ‘miraculous’ increase in milk supply. What are the ingredients of the Body Armor drinks?

What does Body Armor Drink contain?

Based on related articles and a support menu from the sports drink’s website, the armor drink contains a couple of ingredients including :

  • Filtered Water,
  • Coconut Water Concentrate,
  • Pure Cane Sugar,
  • Vitamins (A, B3, B9, B6, B12, C, D, E)
  • Electrolyte (Dipotassium Phosphate and Magnesium Oxide),
  • Natural Flavors and Colors

Image showing the ingredients contained in the BodyArmor Drink

Now that we are done listing out the power menu of the body armor drink, let’s go further and uncork another answer bottle, shall we?

What are the active ingredients contained in Body Armor?

Some of the key ingredients to be aware of as far as Body Armor is concerned are covered below. I have selected a sample to that most likely to support breastfeeding and milk supply are:

Filtered Water

This one is fairly obvious. It has been scientifically proven that breast milk contains 90% water. Tons of studies have also made it clear that hydration is important for milk production. So adding water in whatever form to your diet is a good thing for breastfeeding and milk supply.

Body Armor contains 33.8 Fl Oz of water which will definitely help any nursing mom stay hydrated and help milk production.

Image showing a mom holding a glass of water

Coconut Water Concentrate

Coconut water is very nutritious in its own right. It contains potassium, magnesium, and calcium, has very low calories, and low sugar content. These coconut water constituents (particularly potassium and calcium) are known to boost milk supply and so can help increase lactation.

Image showing some coconut water extract in a mug-jar

Dipotassium Phosphate and magnesium oxide

Each of these ingredients is an electrolyte. Electrolytes are known to control and replenish the volume of water in the body (as seen in coconut water too). This is emphatically, this means that with a bottle or more of body armor drink, the rate of milk production in a pumping or breastfeeding mom could increase essentially.

Pure Cane Sugar

If there is one thing to really be careful about with Body Armor, I would say its the sugar. There is a lot of sugar in Body Armor. It contains pure cane sugar which is a natural sweetener and an energy booster.

This is not necessarily a problem for breastfeeding mothers, but do consider if your body can handle 21g of sugar. For context, the American Heart Association recommends no more than 24g a day for most women. Body Armor may be aware of this and they now have a product called Body Armor Lyte which has no added sugar.

Citric Acid

Citric acid is a collagen-producing fluid that is known to build up antibodies, and acts as an anti oxidant to boost hydration. Citric acid also helps in increasing milk supply.

The presence of this precious additive in any preferred flavor of Body Armor Drink comes with an added advantage that could free up the clogged digestive system of pumping or breastfeeding moms.

Pure Carrot Juice Concentrate

Some Body Armor drinks contain pure carrot juice – this may serve as a color additive but also provides vitamins useful for breastfeeding moms.

Carrot juice also has lactation properties that could contribute to increasing milk supply in breastfeeding women.

Natural Flavors

The one thing that separates the Body Armor Drink and makes it a safer sports drink for milk milking women is the use of fruits and their extracts as flavor.

Some available flavors are Berry Punch, Blueberry Pomegranate, Kiwi Strawberry, Orange Clementine, Peach Mango, Strawberry Lemonade, Tropical Coconut, Watermelon, etc.

Image showing different flavors of the BodyArmor drink for breastfeeding

On the sideline, some breastfeeding mothers have also asked comparative questions that border around the differentiating factor(s) between the Body Armor Drink and Gatorade, since Blue Gatorade has similarly been claimed to be great for milk production.

Is the Body Armor Drink healthier than Gatorade?

Yes, the body armor drink is healthier than Gatorade.

Why?

Body armor drinks are regarded as a healthier sports drink due to the availability of a higher Potassium content and a bit of calcium in them as opposed to that of Gatorade.

This is so because the majority of persons require Potassium way more than Sodium or Magnesium, which is one of the major ingredients in the Gatorade drink.

Body Armor’s sugar content is made from a natural source (cane) while Gatorade contains a larger amount that is produced from dextrose (an artificial source).

Conclusion

Finally, lets us conclude by noting that just drinking water will go a long way towards supporting breastfeeding moms looking to increase milk supply.

It is also important to note that there are lots of other healthy options for achieving the same objective.

You may wonder how your breastfed baby will respond to trying, supplementing with or switching over to formula. Fluctuating spontaneously, homemade breast milk is hard to imitate in terms of taste via formula.

Various formulas on the market with different flavor profiles are more likely to be accepted by breastfed infants. Human milk is sweet, so use a sweet formula if possible, but keep an eye on the sugar levels.

So which formula tastes like breast milk? My list comprises the most nutrient-dense and tasty formulas available on the market. Because each infant is unique, be prepared for a lot of trial and error. The following brands have been well-tolerated by nursing infants so you may use any of them.

10 Formula Tastes Like Breast Milk

The best infant milk formulas that taste like breast milk in terms of nutrition and flavor are as follows:

1. Gerber Good Start

One key ingredient that separates Gerber Good Start from other brands is A2 milk. According to some experts, A2 milk has health benefits and is easier for lactose intolerant people to digest.

What does this mean for your child? If you’re concerned about feeding your infant formula because of a delicate stomach or fears over the safety of formula, try Good Start. It is great for babies’ with gas and who spit up often. The probiotic L. reuteri in this formula aids in the maintenance of a healthy digestive system. According to a 2011 study, taking this probiotic might help alleviate colic symptoms.

Gerber’s Good Start formula, also contains 2′-FL Human Milk Oligosaccharide (HMO), a prebiotic found in breast milk that is key for digestive health. Non-GMO Good Start also has DHA to enhance eye and brain development. Lastly, the product blends smoothly and doesn’t clump like some other brands.

2. Enfamil Enspire Infant Formula With MFGM & Lactoferrin

Enfamil Enspire is one of the most similar baby Formula to human milk, especially nutritionally. Although it often costs a little more than other options, it contains nutrients only found in mother’s milk, making it perfect for breastfed infants. First and foremost, it includes lactoferrin which is found in colostrum. Both colostrum and lactoferrin boost a child’s immune system and digestive function.

This formula also contains MFGM (aka milk fat globule membrane, choline, iron, and omega-3 DHA–all critical elements for cognitive development. If you’re looking for an infant formula that comes as close as possible to breast milk, give Enfamil Enspire a try!

3. Similac Pro-Advance Non-GMO Infant Formula with Iron

Similac’s Pro-Advance formula contains nutrients that have been shown to assist a baby’s health and development. Important ingredients like DHA, vitamin E, and lutein help support brain growth, eye health, and overall physical development.

Prebiotic 2′-FL HMO aids not only your child’s stomach but also their immune system. Unlike other formulas, this contains no growth hormones and is guaranteed not to clump. If you’re looking for a hypoallergenic option, Alimentum or Nutramigen are both great choices.

I debated including Similac in this list. The Similac brand has struggled recently, with some products sadly being in 2022 recalled due to defective packaging. I decided to leave it in, because of I am hopeful that the brand can recover trust and get back to the high quality it always represented.

4. Enfamil A2 Premium Infant Formula

Enfamil A2 premium formula is based on A2 milk, which is beneficial for digestive health. Consider this option if your infant has a sensitive tummy. It’s free of GMOs and includes DHA, which is better for a baby’s brain development.

Your baby is more satisfied and comfortable after every feed when there’s less gas. Because it’s simple to combine and tastes wonderful, breastfed babies will enjoy it.

5. Earth’s Best Organic Dairy Infant Powder Formula with Iron

Earth’s Best is a well-known organic product brand. The infant formula is USDA-certified organic, and is made with non-GMO ingredients.

Earth’s Best combine a lot of great ingredients in their infant formula milk powder. Iron, essential for healthy growth and brain development. DHA and ARA help neuronal, ocular, and brain development. Lactose, whey protein concentrate, and corn syrup solids are other organic ingredients.

The organic, plant-based formula is perfect for infants who are sensitive to cow’s milk. This means that parents who use Earth’s Best formula don’t have to worry as much about gas, acid reflux, or yellow spit-up

6. Nestle Nan 1 Pro Infant Formula Powder

Nestle Nan is a great option for supplementing breastmilk with formula. This baby formula contains 2′-FL HMO and L. reuteri, which have been proven to aid digestion and help reduce infant gas or indigestion-related fussiness. One downside of the Nestle Nan 1 Pro is that it does sometimes clump up, which can be a hassle when compared to many alternatives on the market.

7. Happy Baby Organic Infant Formula

Another organic choice is Happy Baby. The are USDA certified organic and GMO-free. Their products are free from rice, wheat, or corn-derived maltodextrin. The formula also contains galactooligosaccharides and fructooligosaccharides (FOS), which nourish stomach microorganisms and aid digestion.

This product is complete with ARA, DHA, and other essential nutrients to promote growth in babies.

8. Enfamil NeuroPro Infant Formula

Enfamil NeuroPro also contains MFGM, which has been found to aid in newborns’ cognitive development and provide infection protection. A 2019 study showed that adding MFGM to formula positively affected babies’ cognition and well-being.

I have heard some moms worry that formula-fed babies are more susceptible to infection or illness. Hopefully this product helps reassure these moms that there are formula options available that might help.

Enfamil is a hypoallergenic and GMO-free cow’s milk replacement with prebiotics and DHA. Vitamin D3, calcium, and taurine are some of the other ingredients. If your kid has a fragile digestive system, try using Enfamil’s gentler formulation.

9. Baby’s Only Organic LactoRelief with DHA & ARA Toddler Formula

Baby’s Only Organic is a great choice if you’re thinking of formula options for your 12 to 36-month-old. It’s free of harmful pesticides, corn and glucose syrup, antibiotics, and other substances.

The firm does not use hexane, a hazardous chemical, to process DHA. This product will be pleasant to your baby’s taste buds and easy on her tummy, reducing fussiness and crying.

10. Pure Bliss by Similac

Similac is great for newborns. So great in fact that it is a staple in many hospital systems. Similac Pure Bliss includes everything your baby needs for the first year. It’s free of antibiotics and palm olein oil. Palm olein oil might contribute to constipation, which can be fatal to newborns.

Palm olein oil has also been shown to reduce bone density and calcium uptake, according to a study conducted in 2006. Pure Bliss includes DHA, ARA, lutein, and vitamin B12. Breastfed infants prefer pure Bliss’s flavor.

which formula tastes like breast milk

Conclusion

Which formula tastes like breast milk? Finding breast milk-tasting formulas might be tough, especially when purchasing online. Some babies are also more picky than others; if this is the case with your little one, be prepared to test different brands before finding one that works for you.

Breastfeeding is fantastic for babies, but it is not the only available path to ensuring baby is getting the right nutrition. When comparing components and brands, consider your baby’s digestive issues – for example, some parents have discovered that their babies prefer ready-to-feed formula to powdered infant food. The modern baby formula are better than ever, so you’ll still be giving your child the best possible start.

If you’re a new mom, breastfeeding may take some getting used to. Having the right supplies and accessories can make the difference and ensure you have as comfortable and successful a breastfeeding experience as possible. In this post we share 10 of our top breastfeeding essentials for new moms.

10 Breastfeeding Essentials

When breastfeeding for the first time, there’s a lot of learning happening – for you and your baby. The last thing you need is discomfort and stress at this time. We selected these essentials because they remove some of the stress of breastfeeding, allowing you focus on what is most important – getting baby the nutrition she needs.

1. Supportive Nursing Bra

Nursing bras have cups that can be unhooked and pushed down, making it simpler to reach your breasts when breastfeeding. A decent nursing bra will give you support and comfort throughout the day. It’s not uncommon for mothers to feel like their breasts are heavy or full while breastfeeding, but this usually subsides after a few weeks as your milk starts to produce.

Choosing a properly supportive nursing bra that is not overly constricting will assist in minimizing pressure on your shoulders and back while supporting your breasts. Too-tight nursing bras can cause mastitis or blocked ducts, according to research published in the Journal of Perinatal Medicine in 2012.

2. Breastfeeding Pillow

Support your infant with a comfortable nursing pillow that raises them to your breast level. Nursing pillows are super handy. There are useful for moms who have larger cup sizes, are recovering from C-sections, or are nursing twins. Nursing cushions can also assist you while you explore other breastfeeding postures, such as the side-lying position, which is a lifesaver for exhausted new mothers!

A nursing cushion should help relieve tension in your back, neck, shoulders, and arms – making feeding time a more pleasant experience for you.

3. Nursing Pads

Breast pads, commonly known as nursing pads, are soft, disc-shaped pieces of material that may be inserted into your bra to collect any milk that leaks out of your breasts. Leaking is fairly common during the first few months as your milk supply adjusts to baby’s needs. If you don’t leak, that’s okay – it does not imply you aren’t producing enough milk.

Breastfeeding is an important part of life and nothing to be embarrassed about, but accidents happen. And we know that leaks can lead to awkward situations and conversations. Avoid all that by getting some nursing pads. Really, it’s just one less thing to worry about.

4. Breastfeeding Clothes

When you’re on the go with your baby, you want nursing to be as easy as possible. In addition to a nursing cover, specialized clothing for breastfeeding can make all the difference. Breastfeeding tanks, blouses and dresses have flaps or openings in the front that keep your breasts easily accessible to your little one.

There have been great advances in the style and functionality of breastfeeding apparel in the last few years. Not only has breastfeeding apparel become more discreet, but it can also be very trendy. You can now find nursing attire in a style that fits any occasion, from formal to professional to casual events.

5. Milk Bags and Storage Containers

At some point many moms will need to pump and store milk. Whether its because of a long trip, preparing to go back to work, or just making it easier for your partner to feed baby while you get a good night’s sleep. Breast milk needs to be collected and stored in specially manufactured storage containers. These containers are constructed to endure repeated freezing and thawing and will keep your milk stash safe and accessible.

Depending on your storage demands, you may use breast milk trays, bags, plastic bottles, food-safe glass containers. Look for BPA-free plastic bags or other containers specifically designed with breast milk storage in mind when choosing storage solutions.

6. Breast Pump

A breast pump is used to extract breast milk from your breasts. They are designed to help extract and collect milk for storage, but speak to any mom who has lots of experience and you will find that there is a lot more to the lowly breast pump. They are used for a range of home remedies – to reduce engorgement, manage excessive milk production, or even boost your milk supply.

You’ll need a good breast pump if you want to return to work. In general, pumping allows you to provide your child the milk they need while they are away from you.

A manual pump may work well for you if you only need to pump occasionally. If you’re returning to work or intend to pump more often, an electric twin breast pump would be a better investment.

7. Nipple Creams, Lotions, and Ointments

Aching nipples are common among breastfeeding moms. Ointments and creams for your nipples may help to soothe, moisturize, and heal cracked, dry, or irritated nipples.

Nipple creams are a bit of an enigma. Several varieties are available, making it tough to decide which one to choose. Many new moms find that lotion with lanolin as its primary component is soothing. Some parents favor natural breast lotions. You may need to test many different ways to determine which works best for you.

8. Nipple Shields

Nipple shields are useful for breastfeeding babies with a weak suck (for example preemies), if you have flat or inverted nipples, or if you are having difficulty getting baby correctly latched.

Nipple shields come in a variety of sizes and need to be correctly fitted.

9. Breast Shells

Breast shells are circular discs that mothers wear between feedings inside their bras. They may be utilized for a variety of reasons. They can be used to improve and correct inverted or flat nipples.

Not to mention, breast shells can also prevent itchy nipples from coming into contact with your clothing. If you’re worried about leaking between feedings, there’s no need to fret; invest in some breast milk collecting shells.

10. Quick-drying wipes and steam cleaning bags for breast pumps

Keeping the breast pump and its parts clean takes a lot of work. Quick wipes allow you to clean the components without using soap or water, which is especially useful when you’re on the go. Steam bags are an easy way to disinfect your pump parts in a few minutes in the microwave.

breastfeeding essentials

Conclusion

Having a new baby is an amazing adventure, and breastfeeding can be a significant part of that journey for many mothers. However, it’s not always easy. Difficulties are very common in the early stages of breastfeeding. This can cause anxiety for some mothers who want to do everything they can to be prepared. One way you can prepare is by gathering supplies that can help support and ease your breastfeeding experience.

To give yourself and your baby the best chance for a breastfeeding relationship, take a prenatal breastfeeding class, consult with a lactation specialist pre-birth, and have all your tools and supplies ready to go. Aside from that, try not to worry too much. Every mom can achieve their nursing goals with appropriate care and tools, despite the difficulties they may face.

A pacifier is undoubtedly one item that transforms from a user to an essential item when you have a new infant. Here are the best pacifiers for breastfeeding youngsters, so you can compare them all and choose the one that is perfect for your baby.

A pacifier can provide several benefits for both you and your child. You know your baby won’t start crying, and disturbing other people can give you peace of mind when out in public. The pacifier can also help soothe your child during long car rides or bedtime, making it easier for them—and you—to get some rest.

In this blog post, we went through the best pacifier for a breastfed baby, as well as how to pick the best pacifier for a breastfed baby.

What to Take Into Account When Choosing Pacifiers For Breastfed Babies

We’ve compiled a list of the top ten pacifiers for every baby, whether breast- or formula-fed. When picking a pacifier for a nursing infant, there are just a few things to consider.

If you are breastfeeding, for example, finding the perfect pacifier may be a bit more complicated because of the risk of nipple confusion. Here are a few things you need to keep in mind as you transition baby to using a pacifier.

  • Wait at least four weeks before using a pacifier: it is advisable to wait until your baby is approximately four weeks old. You should first ensure they know how to feed before providing them with another alternative or method of soothing them. Even though some babies may be given pacifiers earlier than this and still nurse successfully, I would stick with this recommendation unless there is a major reason to go a different path.
  • Consider pacifier materials: When choosing pacifiers, the material and size are the most important features. The majority of pacifiers are made of silicone or latex. 20 years ago, we would view either of these options as fine, but keep in mind that latex allergies are a lot more common these days. Keep a close watch for any signs of a Latex allergy, or just go with Silicone if you’re unsure. You should also ensure that your pacifier is BPA-free.
  • Don’t sweat it: If your infant is resistant to using a pacifier, don’t worry–this is completely normal. Just explore your options and find the right one for your breastfeeding child. It will be worth it in the end!

Based on my experience and research, I’ve compiled a list of 7 of great pacifiers for breastfeeding babies. Babies frequently reject pacifiers that aren’t comfortable, so we’re providing you with a list of the top 7 – feel free to experiment.

7 Best Pacifier For Breastfed Baby

Different babies prefer different types of pacifiers, so it’s important to experiment until you find one your baby likes. That being said, I have drawn on my experience and read tons of review (as I’m sure you also will) to suggest seven of great pacifiers for a breastfed baby.

All of these are Silicone based and advertised as BPA free.

best pacifier for breastfed baby

1. WubbaNub Infant Pacifier

We’ve been using the Wubbanub as our baby pacifier for a while now. Wubbanub was one of the first companies to combine a plush toy and a pacifier. It was a huuuge hit, and is likely to be a hit with your baby too. Moms rave about it – it has a 4.8/5.0 rating on Amazon from over 2 thousand reviews. WabbaNub is 100% silicone – so its latex and BPA free. The attached plush animal is also great because it keeps hands from touching the pacifier directly.

Wubbanub is undoubtedly a more expensive pacifier options out there, so keep reading for more options.

WubbaNub Infant Pacifier - Baby Yellow Duck
  • WubbaNub Brand- The Original Pacifier/Plush Animal combination
  • Durable one piece construction is both functional and stylish. Patented design makes it easy for baby to grasp
  • Distributed in hospitals, NICU and well-baby units nationwide

2. Philips Avent Soothie

I recommend the Philips Avent because its one of the most commonly used in hospitals. It is known for its durability and comes in different shapes colours and sizes. It also has great ratings online 4.8/5.0 from close to 50 thousand ratings is no small feat.

Its silicone based, dishwasher safe, and can safely be sterilized. One cool feature is that it includes a small gap so you can hold it with a finger and keep baby close by. Be sure to keep a close eye on this though – I’ve seen a few gather dust and other particles in that opening.

The Philips Avent is kind of the no-brainer option if you don’t want to think too long about a pacifier brand.

Philips AVENT Soothie Snuggle Pacifier Holder with Detachable Pacifier, 0m+, Giraffe, SCF347/01-1 Count (Pack of 1)
  • Comes with the 0-3 month Soothie pacifier used by doctors and nurses to calm newborns

3. Medela Baby Pacifier

Medela is known for its excellent breast pumps, of course. However, the firm provides a whole range of other breastfeeding supplies to moms and babies – including their range of pacifiers. The Medela Baby Pacifier’s orthodontic form was designed to help infants fall into their natural feeding rhythm while soothing them.

Something I value highly is how easy this pacifier is to clean. It comes with a self-sterilizing case– all you need to do is add water and microwave the pacifier for three minutes.

Medela Baby Pacifier | 0-6 Months | Includes Sterilizing Case | 2-Pack | Soft Silicone | BPA-Free | Supports Natural Suckling | Blue and Clear

4. The Pop Pacifier

Made by Doodle & Co, the ‘Pop’ has a cool feature where it pops back in and closes up if (when!) the pacifier falls to the ground. This helps keep the pacifier clean. It also means that baby gets to experience a realistic “pop back” sensation when the nipple is withdrawn. The Pop is also 100% silicone and BPA free, and dishwasher safe. It’s a great choice.

Doddle & Co. Pop Pacifier, Built-in Pacifier Case, Pops When it Drops Version, 2-Pack - Stage 1 for Baby (Grey/Blush)
  • POPS WHEN IT DROPS: When this baby pacifier takes a tumble, the nipple pops back into its built-in protective silicone bubble- reducing unwanted surface contact.
  • BUILT-IN CASE: Pinch to tuck the nipple away when you’re on the go. Simply throw in your bag or tuck in a pocket and the nipple stays protected.
  • RECOMMENDED AGE: Recommended for babies 0 to 6 months. Once when baby starts to put objects in their mouth themselves, or they begin teething we recommend switching from the Pop to the all-new Pop & Go pacifier.
  • MADE FROM NATURAL AND SAFE MATERIALS: The modern, colorful pacifier is made with 100% high grade silicone and is one, solid piece. All made without lead, PVC, BPA, latex, or phthalates.
  • EASY CARE AND EASY TO CLEAN: Unlike conventional pacifiers, minimal washing is needed with the Pop pacifier. For a more thorough wash, the pacifier is dishwasher safe when cleaned on the top rack.

5. Flexy Pacifier

The Flexy is made by Nanobebe. This pacifier’s soft flexible silicone design aims to feel skin-like and to curve with baby’s chin and nose. This is to feel as close to an actual breast as possible and thereby to reduce the risk of nipple confusion. The pacifier’s nipple is flexible, and the whole thing comfortably fits baby’s mouth.

6. The First Years Gumdrop Newborn

This is yet another popular pacifier option. It’s used in some hospitals and is also designed to resemble a mother’s nipple. I don’t have as much experience with this one and will update this article once I get more first hand information. The amazon reviews suggest getting the right colors might be a bit like spinning a wheel! Keep this in mind if the colour you want is an important consideration.

The First Years Gumdrop Newborn Pacifier, Pink/Purple
  • Trusted by hospitals
  • Unique silicone design stays clear of baby’s button nose
  • Easily works with most pacifier attaches
  • Convenient two-pack so you’ll have a clean spare
  • BPA free, latex free, phthalate free

7. MAM Glow in the Dark Pacifier

Many parents would tell you that the most important thing there care about in a pacifier is that it is there when its needed. These things disappear like bobby pins … or socks. MAM was brilliant because they made theirs glow-in-the-dark. It also comes with a sterilizing storage case for easy sterilisation – just add water and microwave for 3 minutes.

What To Look For In A Bottle For Breastfed Babies

After you’ve decided on the bottle you want, go through one more list to ensure you haven’t forgotten anything.

Bottle Teat Design

A slow-flow teat is generally better since it mirrors how milk naturally flows from the breast. This will be more comfortable for your baby. If your infant has trouble wrapping their lips around a wide-neck nipple teat, then a narrow-neck nipple with a gentle slope might do the trick.

Material

Glass and plastic baby bottles are popular choices. Plastic bottles are less expensive, more readily available, and simpler to hold for your baby than glass ones, especially because they are lighter. If you want to use plastic, be sure it’s BPA-free.

Glass bottles are considerably more environmentally friendly than plastic bottles, and the heavier weight and occasionally higher cost make them more appealing. Plastic does not get stained or absorb odors as readily as glass. Furthermore, it is more long-lasting and simple to maintain.

Compatible Pumps

We’re all for convenience when it comes to bottles that can be linked straight to your breast pump because you won’t have to worry about transferring your milk.

Tips For Buying Bottles

Here are some guidelines you should abide by when purchasing your infant’s first bottle to ensure you don’t make a costly error.

Avoid Buying In Bulk

It would be a shame to purchase 20 bottles only to find out your kid hates them, so buy two or three types of viable candidates instead, and then decide which is best for your infant.

Consider Purchasing The Largest Size

The beautiful 4-ounce bottle is the perfect size for a newborn. On the other hand, the baby will grow fast and will be drinking 6 ounces of milk instead of 4 within a few weeks. Purchase the biggest size accessible; you may always use a set of slow-flow nipples with them until your kid is ready for faster-flow nipples.

Consider Your Breast Pump Brand

Being compatible is often a lifesaver – especially for busy mothers. You can save time using bottles that are compatible with your breast pump so that you can pump directly into them. Who wouldn’t want to save both time and effort?

If You Have A Second Child, Buy Fresh Bottles

I understand that it’s difficult shelling out more money, but if you’re still using bottles from when you had your first child, they might not be safe now. This is especially true if they contain the harmful chemical BPA.

Being a new mother is both delightful and stressful! As if that was not enough, nursing your newborn can also make you feel even more worn out. Exhaustion is a common and valid problem for breastfeeding mothers to manage.

Why does breastfeeding make you tired? A surge of the feel-good hormone Oxytocin occurs in the brain of a mother who is breastfeeding. You might feel tired after an oxytocin rush. In this post, we’ll explore the solution and provide advice for overcoming fatigue.

Reasons Why Does Breastfeeding Make You Tired

We must first identify the type of tiredness we’re talking about. You might be wondering if breastfeeding causes temporary sleepiness or general weariness. Let’s begin by discussing prolactin and oxytocin, two chemicals involved.

Oxytocin And Prolactin

The hormones oxytocin and prolactin are essential for breastfeeding because they play a part in milk production and the letdown reflex. You’ll notice that that these chemicals do more than cause your milk to be produced. They may also help you relax, making you sleepy while breastfeeding.

Oxytocin, in particular, aids with milk letdown. However, this hormone rings a bell for you because it is also known as the bonding and love hormone. It helps you connect with your infant.

It feels fantastic as it helps unwind and relax while nursing your baby, but oxytocin is also likely to be making you feel drowsy while feeding.

Prolactin, on the other hand, is involved in milk production and maintenance. Prolactin, like our friend oxytocin, has an antidepressant effect by promoting calmness and relaxation.

Considering everything, it’s easy to see why breastfeeding may make you feel at ease, drowsy, or tired. Don’t get the impression that all of your new-mother tiredness is caused by breastfeeding or lack of sleep. That isn’t how it works.

New-Mom Fatigue

It’s no wonder you’re exhausted after giving birth. The postpartum period is tough, especially because you are still recovering from childbirth and breastfeeding can be very taxing on your body.

Whether you breastfeed or bottle-feed, you’re bound to be sleep-deprived. It’s just a natural part of having a new baby. Studies show that mothers who use bottles to feed their babies may not get more sleep than mothers who breastfeed.

Aside from the usual lack of sleep, does nursing make you feel more worn out? After all, keeping a healthy milk supply requires much effort from your body. Even though your body is working hard, there is no evidence that nursing by itself causes weariness. How you feed your kid is not directly related to how tired you are.

Benefits Of Breastfeeding

It is crucial to remember that breastfeeding is an intensely personal experience for every woman. There should be no pressure whatsoever in regards to determining whether nursing is the best possible option for you.

There are several reasons why you should breastfeed your infant. Firstly, it provides them with the best possible nutrition and helps protect them from diseases and viruses. Additionally, it encourages brain growth and may lower their risk of developing chronic illnesses later in life. And if that’s not enough incentive for you, nursing helps enhance your bond with your child .

The advantages of breast milk over formula feeding include being more cost-effective and lowering your risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Your body’s oxytocin production also helps your uterus shrink back to its pre-baby dimensions. Breastfeeding may also have environmental benefits as well. Since it requires use of less paper and plastic packaging material, it can be the more environmentally friendly option.

Tips For Dealing When Breastfeeding Does Make You Tired

The following suggestions will help you cope with weariness and take care of your body, whether you’re experiencing the impacts of prolactin and oxytocin or struggling with new-mom fatigue. Remember to be patient with yourself; it’s normal to feel exhausted when you have so much going on.

1. Eat Healthy Food

What you put in your body greatly influences your general health, even if you are not breastfeeding. During the postpartum period, when you’re recovering and simultaneously nursing your baby, it’s critical to drink enough water and eat properly. Lean protein, whole grains, healthy fats, and various fruits and vegetables are all necessary components of nutritious eating while nursing.

2. Sleep

Get enough sleep! Your body needs cat naps during the day because you likely aren’t receiving a full night’s sleep. Put your legs up when your baby is sleeping, even if you can’t manage to “sleep when the baby sleeps.” A midday nap can be quite beneficial to your health.

3. Use Nipple Cream

Two commonly recommended sore nipple remedies for that common tenderness in the early days:

  • Lanolin for breastfeeding – make sure it is approved for breastfeeding. Moms like Medela Tender Care Lanolin because it is a thin consistency. That makes it easier to apply.
  • Breastfeeding gel pads. These were a game-changer when they first came out. There are several different brands. Andrea Tran, an experienced Lactation Consultant only recommends Ameda ComfortGels.
    • Secret tip: put gel pads in the fridge to amp up the soothing power.
    • Another tip is to get more than one pair. Keep one in the fridge while you are wearing another pair.
    • They need to be changed every few days so have some ready to go when yours get cloudy or have reached the time for replacement.

4. Make Yourself At Ease

While you’re nursing your kid, take a seat. If you can discover a posture that is pleasant for you, you may relax while nursing. This might make the whole process less demanding.

It’s vital to find a relaxed nursing position for you and your baby so that they can latch on properly. A good latch allows your baby to get the necessary milk and makes sure your nipples are spared any distress.

5. Consult A Lactation Consultant

Sore or damaged nipples can be a sign of an improper latch. See a lactation expert if you have difficulty finding a comfortable breastfeeding posture. They are specialists and can help you choose the best position and evaluate your child’s latch. Please do not put it off! The last thing you want while dealing with nursing fatigue is to become irritable, exhausted, or achy from trying.

6. Ask for Help

Asking your friends and family for help with daily tasks is just as wise as seeking the advice of a breastfeeding expert. It really does take a village. The good news is that your loved ones want to help and are ready to do so – they may only need reminding of what needs to be done from time to time.

Requesting assistance from friends or family can be difficult, but delegating some tasks is important, making your workload more manageable. Whether you need help making dinner or cleaning the house, don’t hesitate to reach out to your loved ones.

Conclusion

Why does breastfeeding make you tired? When you’re nursing, prolactin and oxytocin can calm you and make you tired, as we’ve seen in this post. In addition, postpartum recovery and sleep deprivation contribute to fatigue.

Being a mother can be a full time job. You’re juggling 1,000 tasks with very little time for rest or relaxation. To help ward off exhaustion, taking care of yourself physically and mentally is important. Eat healthy, nutritious meals, get as much sleep as you can (take naps when possible), wear comfortable clothing while breastfeeding, and seek help from others when needed.

Your baby is precious, and no matter how weary and stressed out you are right now – fight the fatigue and remember that its all worthwhile.

Surrogacy is a beautiful act. It’s the sharing of one’s very body with another being for the benefit of another being or several other beings. Of course, like traditional pregnancies and life in general, it’s not without its emotional components and questions. The following will explore one common question in particular: how breastfeeding works in surrogacy situations.

What Is Surrogacy?

Surrogacy is an arrangement, commonly involving a legal agreement, wherein a woman agrees to carry a pregnancy to full term and deliver the baby on behalf of another person or people who will become the child’s legal parents after the birth. Surrogacy isn’t something that everyone feels capable of or inclined to do, but for the right woman can be a wonderful way to support another family.

Surrogates are typically healthy women who tend to have positive pregnancy experiences—not everyone loves the sensation of being pregnant, but some women thrive in that state. The process of becoming a surrogate or selecting one is, of course, much more complex than that; surrogate FAQs can be found here if you need more information. Again, a legal agreement is commonly part of a surrogacy arrangement meaning the legal council might be part of a rounded understanding of the process.

Induced Lactation Is Possible

Foremost, when people are looking into surrogacy and breastfeeding options, it’s common to rule out the possibility of a woman breastfeeding the child that will legally be hers once the pregnancy is complete because she wasn’t the one carrying the child and, therefore, will not have milk to offer. This isn’t always the case. Lactation induction is possible in some cases, allowing women who have used a surrogate to still have the experience of breastfeeding their child. Given the vital role breastfeeding plays in acclimatizing a baby to its bacterial environment, this can be incredibly beneficial to a baby’s health. It can also assist in the stages of bonding that occur between a mother and her child.

Typically, inducing lactation requires hormonal supplements, herbal supplements, and pumping tools to help get the flow going. All of this usually takes place prior to the child’s birth.

Using Surrogate Breastmilk

Depending on the arrangement with the surrogate, it’s also common to use the surrogate’s breast milk. Many surrogates are open to pumping for up to six weeks after the baby is born. The pumped milk can then be fed to the baby using a bottle. Depending on how far apart the parents and surrogate live, this can become difficult to manage. Moreover, given that pumping typically requires the surrogate to stop every few hours—even during the night—and pump, it often comes with a financial cost as the surrogate will not be able to perform standard work without interruption or even sleep through the night.

Baby drinking from a bottle

Milk Donation

A third option, if breast milk is your focus, is to seek out local milk donation centers. There are wonderful women who donate their milk to assist those who are unable to breastfeed their infants for whatever reason. Parents might want to take a second to read up about circadian rhythms and breast milk, as this can influence their baby’s sleep habits. It turns out that milk pumped during the day encourages wakefulness in an infant, whereas milk pumped at night encourages fatigue. Mixing up day and night milk can result in mixing up your schedule.

The above information should have outlined a few common pathways to securing breastmilk for a child born via surrogacy. Of course, every family and their needs vary. It’s important to take stock of the emotional and mental energies of everyone involved and readjust if you need to.
